Why Maths, Physics and Chemistry are the three subjects DP students most often need help with
These three sit at the intersection of three difficulties at once:
Content volume. DP Physics and Chemistry both compress two years of dense theory into five themes with no optional topics to hide behind.
Skill transfer. Knowing the theory is not the same as scoring. DP examiners reward reasoning shown on paper, not the right final number.
University stakes. These are the subjects engineering, medicine, computer science and economics offers are conditional on. A 5 instead of a 7 in HL Chemistry can cost an offer.
Most students who come to us are not weak students. They are strong students who have never been taught to write for an IB examiner.
What DP Maths, Physics and Chemistry actually look like right now
This matters more than most tuition advertising admits, because two of these three subjects have changed recently and the third changes soon. Extra help that teaches to an old format is worse than no extra help.
IB DP Physics and Chemistry (current syllabus, first assessed May 2025)
The 2023 sciences review changed the shape of the exam, not just the content. Under the current guides:
Paper 1 is sat as two booklets in one sitting — Paper 1A multiple-choice and Paper 1B data-based questions. Paper 1A is multiple choice; Paper 1B is data-based.
Paper 2 mixes data-based, short-answer and extended-response questions. Paper 2 contains data-based, short-answer and extended-response questions.
Options are gone. There are no longer optional topics for Higher Level students to select from — HL students take all SL material plus the HL extension. If your child is revising astrophysics from an old book, they are revising content that will not be examined.
The split is 80% exams, 20% Scientific Investigation. The weighting of the papers against the scientific investigation remains 80% to 20%.
Calculators and the data booklet are allowed in Paper 1. Calculator and data booklet use is now permitted in Paper 1A.
What this changes about how you prepare: Paper 1B is where the marks quietly move. It has effectively absorbed the old Paper 3 Section A, and its weighting went up substantially. Uncertainty propagation, systematic vs random error, graph gradients with units, and evaluating someone else's method are now core exam skills for every DP science student — not just a lab-report afterthought.
IB DP Mathematics AA and AI (current syllabus — and the 2027 change)
DP Maths splits into Analysis and Approaches (AA) — the algebra, proof and calculus route — and Applications and Interpretation (AI) — the modelling, statistics and technology route. Both run at SL and HL. Both carry a 20% Mathematical Exploration (the IA).
The structural rule that trips students up most: SL and HL Paper 1 are non-calculator. Paper 2 (and HL Paper 3) permit a GDC. A student who has learned every topic on a graphing calculator has not learned Paper 1.
And there is a change coming that parents of Grade 9 and 10 students need on their radar right now. The new DP Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches course launches in February 2027, for first teaching in August 2027, with first assessment in May 2029. The same timeline applies to Applications and Interpretation.

The AA changes focus on course coherence, reducing content overload and refining the assessment structure rather than adding new content areas. For AI, the Mathematical Exploration remains a central and unchanged component.
Practical consequence: a student sitting May 2027 or May 2028 should be drilling current past papers and ignoring the 2027 noise entirely. A student currently in Grade 9 who will start DP in August 2027 should be choosing AA vs AI with the new guide in mind.
What good extra help does — and what it doesn't

The single highest-return activity in DP Maths, Physics and Chemistry is supervised past-paper work with immediate correction of how the answer was written. Students lose marks for stating instead of explaining, for a missing unit, for a conclusion that doesn't reference the data, for skipping the "hence" in a Maths proof. None of that is fixed by watching another video.
How INACADEMICS teaches these three subjects
Batches of 4 to 8 students. Small enough that a teacher can look at every student's working during the session, not just collect it. This is the core of how we work and the reason we cap enrolment per batch.
Taught to the current guide, from the current papers. Physics and Chemistry are taught against the 2025-onwards structure — including deliberate Paper 1B training on uncertainty, error and data analysis. Maths is taught with Paper 1 non-calculator work separated out and practised under time.
Command terms treated as content. State, outline, explain, deduce, justify, compare and evaluate each carry a different expectation and a different mark allocation. Students are drilled on recognising the term before writing a word.
IA supervision on a calendar. The Scientific Investigation (20% of Physics and Chemistry) and the Mathematical Exploration (20% of Maths) are 60% of a three-subject student's coursework burden. We work these to deadlines with structured feedback, keeping strictly within IB academic-integrity rules — the work is the student's, the supervision is ours.
Grades 8 to 12, five curricula. Because we also teach IB MYP, Cambridge IGCSE, CBSE and ICSE, we regularly bridge students moving into DP from a different system in Grade 10 — the transition where most of the early DP damage happens.
