Class 12 in 2027: One Exam, Two Battles

Class 12 parents have a harder planning problem than Class 10 parents, and they are given less help with it.
Two facts sit behind that. First, Class 12 does not have a second attempt. The two-phase board examination introduced for Class 10 does not extend to Class 12 — February 2027 is the only attempt in the academic year. Second, most Class 12 students are simultaneously preparing for an entrance exam that runs on a different syllabus, a different question style, and a different calendar.
One exam, two battles, and about six months in which to fight both. Here is how the ground actually lies.
The paper: same recipe as Class 10, different stakes
The question composition is identical across Classes 9 to 12 and has been since the 2024-25 session:

That competency share moved from 30% to 40% to 50% over three sessions for Class 12. It is now settled, and the papers your child's seniors wrote in 2025 and 2026 are a fair guide to what February 2027 will look like.

Three hours per theory paper. Fifteen minutes of reading time before the clock starts. No calculators. No negative marking.
The 30 marks most families under-plan
For each science subject, thirty marks sit outside the theory paper. Across Physics, Chemistry and Biology that is ninety marks — nearly a full paper's worth — decided before the theory exams even begin.
Those marks come from the practical examination, which typically includes an experiment performed on the day, the practical record and file, a project or activity component, and a viva conducted with an external examiner present.
Practicals for the 2026-27 session are expected around January–February 2027, and earlier — November to December 2026 — for winter-bound schools. That timing is the trap. Practicals land exactly when the student wants to be doing full-length theory papers, and a file that has been neglected since August turns into three lost weekends in the worst possible month.
The fix is unglamorous: keep the record current from September, one experiment at a time, as they are performed. It costs an hour a week and it protects thirty marks per subject.

Entrance-exam dates for the 2027 cycle are announced separately by NTA and should be checked directly rather than taken from a forwarded message.
Boards and entrances: how the two syllabi actually relate
A common mistake is to treat these as two entirely separate workloads. They are not, and the overlap is where the time is found.

The honest version for parents: NCERT is the common ground. For NEET and CUET especially, thorough NCERT-based board preparation is the majority of the entrance preparation. For JEE, the concepts overlap while the question style does not, so the two need separate practice even when they cover the same chapter.
A month-by-month split that works
August – October: 70% boards, 30% entrance. School is teaching new material and it is board syllabus. Stay level with it. Entrance work in this period should be conceptual rather than test-series based. Keep the practical file current from day one.
November – December: 60% boards, 40% entrance. Close the board syllabus by 31 December. This is the same non-negotiable that applies to Class 10 and it matters more here, because January is consumed by practicals.
January: 85% boards. Practicals, then full-length theory papers under timed conditions. Entrance preparation reduces to maintenance — a daily problem set, nothing more. This is the month parents push back on, and it is the month where the push-back costs the most. A student who chases a mock test series through January arrives at the board exams unrehearsed.
February – early April: boards only. There is no honest way to split attention during the exam window itself. Papers are spread across weeks, and the gap between two papers belongs to the next paper.
April onwards: entrance preparation resumes with the full syllabus already revised twice through the board cycle. Students who did the boards properly find this period far easier than students who split their attention all year.
Where Class 12 students lose marks they had earned
From years of reading Class 12 scripts, four patterns repeat.
Derivations written as answers rather than as derivations. Physics and Maths marking schemes award marks step by step. A correct final answer with three steps missing scores less than a wrong final answer with all steps shown.
Diagrams and labels skipped under time pressure. Ray diagrams, circuit diagrams, biological structures. Where the question asks for one, it carries its own marks and there is no partial credit for describing it in words.
Chemical equations left unbalanced. A recurring, entirely avoidable loss.
The last long answer left incomplete. Almost always a time-management failure, almost never a knowledge failure, and it is the single most common cause of a script scoring below the student's capability. It is fixed by writing full papers on a clock, and by no other means.
Frequently asked questions
Does CBSE Class 12 have two board exams in 2027? No. The two-phase examination applies to Class 10 only. Class 12 continues with a single annual board examination, expected from mid-February 2027.
What is the CBSE Class 12 exam pattern for 2026-27? Fifty percent competency-focused questions, 20% select-response MCQs and 30% constructed-response short and long answers. Science subjects carry 70 theory plus 30 practical marks; Maths, Commerce and Humanities carry 80 theory plus 20 internal assessment.
When are Class 12 practical exams held? Expected in January–February 2027 for most schools, and November–December 2026 for winter-bound schools. Individual school schedules vary and should be confirmed with the school.
Can a Class 12 student prepare for boards and JEE or NEET at the same time? Yes, and most do. The content overlaps substantially, particularly for NEET and CUET where the syllabus is close to NCERT. The question style differs, so both formats need practice, and board preparation should take clear priority from January onwards.
Is a minimum score needed in practicals to pass? Yes. Thirty-three percent is required in the theory and practical components separately, not merely in the combined total.
