When Should Your Child Start Tuitions? An Honest Answer

Most parents ask this question with two hidden answers already in mind: 'Not Class 10. That's too late.' Or 'Not now. My child is only in Class 8. It's too early.'

Both instincts are wrong — and understanding why requires looking at what tuition is actually supposed to do.

The Common Triggers — and Why They're Late

Trigger 1: 'The boards are next year'

Waiting until Class 9 or 10 to start MYP or ICSE tuitions is like deciding to train for a marathon three weeks before race day. The conceptual foundation for board-level performance is built in Classes 7–8. A student who has never been taught to write to MYP criteria will not learn it in four months before the eAssessment.

Trigger 2: 'The grades dropped'

This is actually the right time to start — but it should never be the only time. A grade drop is a symptom. The cause is usually a concept gap that was missed 6–12 months earlier. Starting tuitions here is damage control, which is valuable, but prevention was more valuable.

Trigger 3: 'My child is struggling emotionally with school'

This is the most important trigger of all. If your child is anxious before tests, avoids homework, or has started to say 'I'm just not good at Maths' — that is the moment to act. A good tuition environment rebuilds confidence before it rebuilds grades.

The Right Answer: It Depends on Three Variables

Variable 1: The Curriculum

IB MYP students benefit from tuition support from Class 8 onwards — ideally from the start of the MYP journey, as criterion-based writing is a skill that requires years of practice, not months. IGCSE students often need intensive support from Grade 9, with the volume of Cambridge papers and the specificity of mark-scheme answers. ICSE students can generally start in Class 9, though Class 8 reinforcement in Maths and Science helps significantly. CBSE students who are aiming for JEE or NEET need to start building their conceptual foundation in Class 9 at the latest.

Variable 2: Your Child's Learning Style

Some children absorb school teaching well and only need targeted support before exams. Others need a parallel tuition environment to process concepts at a slower pace with more attention. A diagnostic assessment — which good tuition centres offer before enrolment — will tell you which kind your child is.

Variable 3: Your Goals

A family targeting a Grade 7 in MYP has different preparation needs than one targeting a pass. A student aiming for IBDP Physics HL needs a stronger MYP Physics base than one who will take a different pathway. Be honest about goals — not aspirational, honest — and calibrate accordingly.

The One Universal Rule

If your child is in Class 8 or above, in any curriculum, and there are any of the following — you should not wait:

•        Consistent scores below 50% in any core subject

•        A teacher flag or report card comment about concept gaps

•        Increasing homework avoidance or test anxiety

•        A recent school change or curriculum change

•        A gap after illness, travel, or extended absence

Any of these is a signal, not a coincidence. Earlier intervention is always more efficient than later.

What About 'Too Early'?

Starting tuitions for a high-performing Class 8 student in an IB school is not wasteful — it is enrichment. The MYP criteria reward depth of thought. A student who has been practising criterion-aligned responses since Class 8 will write significantly better eAssessments in Class 10 than one who starts in Class 9.

'Early' in the tuition context means starting before the crisis — not starting before the skill is needed.
