In MYP Years 1–3, a competent description of what you did and what you learned might earn you a Level 4 or 5. In MYP Year 5, the same quality of response will earn you a Level 2. Year 5 examiners expect greater sophistication, more nuanced analysis, stronger use of subject-specific terminology, and a deeper engagement with real-world implications.
Sophistication: What Does It Look Like?
Sophistication in Criterion D does not mean using complex vocabulary for the sake of it. It means demonstrating multiple layers of thinking: acknowledging complexity, engaging with contradictions, and recognising that issues are rarely black and white. For example, rather than concluding 'this design was successful', a sophisticated Year 5 response might argue: 'While the design met three of five success criteria, its failure to meet the accessibility requirements reveals a fundamental tension between aesthetic choices and inclusive design principles — one that would require a complete rethink of the material palette in a future iteration.'
The Role of Global Contexts in Year 5
In Year 5, the connection between your work and a Global Context should be explicit and nuanced, not tokenistic. Do not simply name the Global Context and move on. Explain HOW your work contributes to or challenges a global pattern, issue, or question. Show the examiner that you understand your work exists within a larger human context.
