A 7–8 response demonstrates sustained, coherent, and logical organisation throughout the entire piece. This means your paragraphs must flow naturally from one to the next, with clear topic sentences, developed evidence, and thoughtful transitions. Avoid isolated ideas that appear without context or connection to your overarching argument.
Register and Style: Writing for Your Audience
Criterion D rewards students who consciously adapt their language to purpose and audience. Analytical writing requires formal register, precise vocabulary, and objective tone. Creative writing rewards originality, imagery, and distinctive voice. A common mistake is writing a creative piece in the same dry, formal style as an essay. Show the examiner that you understand genre conventions.
Accuracy and Variety
Grammatical accuracy is non-negotiable for the 7–8 band. But accuracy alone is not enough — you must also demonstrate variety: varied sentence structures, a broad vocabulary range, and deliberate stylistic choices. Read your work aloud before submission.
