In IB MYP Mathematics, Criterion D is called Applying Mathematics in Real-Life Contexts. It assesses your ability to identify relevant mathematics from real situations, apply mathematical strategies to solve authentic problems, reflect on the reasonableness of your solution, and make connections between mathematics and the world around you. For many students, this is both the most interesting and the most challenging criterion — because it requires mathematical confidence AND reflective, communicative skills.
What Criterion D Asks of You
At the highest achievement level (7–8), students must identify the relevant mathematics within a complex real-life situation, select and apply appropriate mathematical strategies, produce detailed and organised mathematical work, and critically reflect on whether their results make sense in context.
Step 1: Identifying the Mathematics
Read the real-life scenario carefully. What mathematical concepts are hidden within it? Geometry? Probability? Functions? Algebra? Being explicit about which areas of mathematics you are applying earns marks even before you begin calculating. Write a brief statement: 'In this problem, I will use [concept] because...'
Step 2: Applying Strategies Correctly
Show all working clearly and systematically. MYP examiners are trained to look for logical progression, correct use of notation, and appropriate mathematical language. Errors in calculation are penalised less heavily than unclear or disorganised working.
Step 3: Reflecting on Your Solution
• Does the answer make sense in context? (A negative number of people is not realistic)
• What are the limitations of your mathematical model?
• How could the model be improved with more data or different assumptions?
• What does your result tell us about the real-world situation?
💡 Inacademics Tip: Inacademics offers a dedicated MYP 5 Mathematics Criterion D question bank with real-life modelling tasks across all branches of mathematics. Their step-by-step solution guides show you exactly how to structure your reflection commentary to target the 7–8 achievement level.
